Swiftwater Rescue Courses

Swiftwater Courses

 

We are a Rescue Canada Training Centre. We offer Recreational and Occupational Swiftwater Safety Rescue courses from Awareness to Rescue Specialist levels.

All levels predominant emphasis on safety. Depending on level, you will have an understanding of moving water, hazard awareness and avoidance, personal knowledge based, simple to complex shore based safety and rescue skills in low to high risk swiftwater environments. Self and teammate rescue. Knowledge of simple rope techniques and knowing personal limits and abilities.

In these courses, you’ll learn how the river works, and how to recognize hazards and mitigate them.

 You’ll learn safety techniques for how to operate around and in the river. As well we offer training in self-rescue (if you fall in), companion rescue (if your partner falls in), and subject rescue (improvised and organized rescue response).

 This course is for emergency responders, industry workers, tourism guides, and the public.

Swiftwater Awareness Online – $99

Basic Theory and Knowledge of Swiftwater Safety

This online awareness course is the first step in your safety and rescue training. This comprehensive course covers topics of how the river works, basic equipment needs, safety and rescue applications and more.  

This is a self paced online course that takes up to 4 hrs to complete and is the prerequisite for the Swiftwater Safety Rescue Courses.

Swiftwater Safety Rescue Level 1 – Safety $250

Basic safety and Hazard assessment

This is the first practical course in the swiftwater environment which is geared for the student to understand and avoid the hazards associated in the swiftwater.  

The students experience how to mitigate hazards and develop personal safety skills in a practical river environment. This course is designed for those that would work up to the river’s edge.

 

Swiftwater Safety Rescue Level 2 – Operations $400

Basic safety and Hazard assessment

This is the first practical course in the swiftwater environment which is geared for the student to understand and avoid the hazards associated in the swiftwater.  

The students experience how to mitigate hazards and develop personal safety skills in a practical river environment. This course is designed for those that would work up to the river’s edge.

 

Swiftwater Safety Rescue Level 3 – Technician $500

Level 2 plus subject rescue, rescue swimming and rescue systems

Need to perform in water rescues or work in medium to high risk environment, then this is your course.  Working from simple to complex systems and focusing on third party rescues are all performed beyond the skills previously taught in the other courses.  

 Swimming in Class 2-3 whitewater, contact rescues and scenarios are the focus of this training course.

 

Swiftwater Safety Rescue Level  – Advance $615

Level 3 plus Team Leadership, advanced systems and high risk scenarios

All previous performed skills are put to the test along with the introduction of high risk and complex systems and scenarios.  

Canyons, Class 4 whitewater, flooding, Swiftwater Ropes and vehicles are introduced in this intense course.  We focus on building Team Leadership and advanced problem solving.

 

 

River Wise Safety Rescue Program for Youths

 

Rescue Canada’s River Wise Safety Program is a community based series of safety awareness and training certification courses.  They are intended for the general public and focus on the inherent dangers of swimming, boating, playing and working in or near the moving water environment.

The programs specifically address an increasing numbers of losses of life due to drowning.  It is Rescue Canada’s belief that these losses of life can be mitigated to a certain extent by providing simplified, accessible and understandable courses for kids, youth and adults playing in and around rivers.
Basic skills taught in professional courses have been adapted to a simple river safety awareness and self rescue course for children and young adults in an effort to provide a safe and enjoyable river experience.

Course specially designed for children, youth and families. It teaches youth and families how to be safe around the river and enjoy the river for all types of activities

5-8 years old

River Start – $60

The course is designed to give a fun and active look into how to play safely around and in the river environment.  The overall goal is to provide training or tasks for playing safe around the river.

As noted earlier, participants do not need to be able to swim for the River Start course.

9-12 years old

River Safe | $70

This course is tailored to those who actively play and participate in recreational activities in and around the river.

The focus on this course is to provide participants with the ability to recognize and avoid dangers in the river.  Participant should be able to swim.

 

13-16 years old

River Smart | $90

This course is designed to give the participants the ability to recognize and avoid dangers.  It also introduces self and assisted rescue techniques.

Participants will be taught to know their own limitations and abilities.  As well they will learn some tools and skills to aid in the rescue of others.

 

 

17+ years old

River Wise | $100

This course is designed to give the participants the ability to recognize and avoid dangers.  It also introduces self and assisted rescue techniques.

Participants will be taught to know their own limitations and abilities.  As well they will learn some tools and skills to aid in the rescue of others.

 

 

Raft Guiding School

Want to work in the outdoors as a raft guide?  Get your start in the guiding world by joining us for our annual raft guiding school in the Spring of every year.

What’s included

• 50hrs of practical and theoretical training in the river guiding skills required to obtain certification as a entry level river guide in Canada.
• Training will take place on local rivers: Campbell River, Oyster River and Nimpkish River.
• Course content meets or exceeds the federal government standards that was implemented in April, 2004.
• Instructors are active river guides with over 50 years combined river experience, including the former BC Rafting Regulations Officer.
• Approved training and third party examination process results in nationally recognized certification for oar guides.
• Helmet, wetsuit, booties, PFD, transportation to & from rivers and training equipment provided.
• Local employment opportunities for top candidates.

Pre-requisites: physically fit; good swimming skills; excellent judgement, ability to assess risk and people skills; 18 years old by May 13th, 2016 (exam date). You will be required to sign a release waiver and complete a detailed medical questionnaire.

Recommended: OFA level 1 + Transportation Endorsement & CPR or a 2 day Standard first aid certificate – required as part of licensing as a guide. Rescue Canada SRT (Swiftwater Rescue Technician level 2) – SRT available in conjunction with the guide school at a 60% discount.

Swiftwater Services

 

Technical Services

We have the ability and experience to complete a variety of river-based technical work. As the only certified river outfitter on Vancouver Island, we are ideally situated to provide cost effective river work for agencies and companies operating in or on our island river environments. We have successfully carried out river survey work for BC Hydro on the Campbell River, including completing river transects, depth/velocity & substrate measurements.

Commercial Services

Destiny River Adventures is unique in its ability to provide a wide range of commercial and technical services. Company staff are qualified technicians for fish, wildlife, recreation and habitat restoration work.  We are trained and certified in river safety, rope rescue and first aid.

Commercial Film Support

We are experienced in working with various commercial film operations. We have provided on-river support services for CBS television, Knowledge Network and the Xcursions adventure show. We also have experience working with the Knowledge Network on approx. 12 BC Moments vignettes involving wilderness activities. In November 2005 we provided water safety services and equipment for Bright Light Productions commercial filming for Dungeon Siege – In The Name of the King.

Included in a full day Nimpkish river trip.

  • “RIVER TIME” is approx. 4 to 6 hrs depending on river levels and size of group.
  • Includes wetsuit, booties, PFD, helmet and riverside buffet lunch plus hot chocolate when back at bus. Please let us know if any alergies or dietary needs.
  • Youth 12 years old and under must be at least 50 lbs to fit the rafting safety equipment.
